Children's Read Alouds

There are too many to list here! I have discovered that I absolutely love reading aloud. It has been a treasure to my heart, and a way that our family has built a beautiful culture in our home.

One suggestion - if you don't enjoy reading a chapter book to your children, just stop. There are just too many great books! And if you don't enjoy the book, you won't read it as often, and it will take forever to drag through it, and no one will enjoy it. If your children are old enough to read it, they can read it on their own if they want, and you can spend your time snuggling with them while reading something you truly enjoy. Your joy for a book is contagious, and they will pick up on that and enjoy it too!

Here are some of my favorites:

Charlotte's Web by E. B. White
A classic. It's the best. I love it. I've read it many times to our kids, and it's probably time to do it again soon. I especially love it in the fall. Maybe it's the fair. And I do cry every time, and I'm fine with that.

A Little Princess (Puffin in Bloom) by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Another classic, and another treasure! I was surprised at how much I loved this book. It is so heartwarming and endearing, and has such beautiful lessons in it for all of us. Love, love, love.

The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street (1) by Karina Yan Glaser
This book is so sweet. It is about a family in Harlem who might lose their lease of their beloved brookstone in Harlem. It is so charming and fun. Our entire family loved this one.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Oh, this book. I remember hearing this read aloud when I was about 11 in our classroom, and being hugely impacted. I also remember when I read it aloud to our sons and how powerful it was for them. It is a beautiful coming of age story.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I love Anne. She's become another friend to many in our family. We love her humanity, her temper, her love of nature, her awe and wonder, her struggle, her loyalty, what a good friend and daughter she is, her love of books, and her desire to be good.

The Wild Robot (The Wild Robot (1)) by Peter Brown
This book has really short chapters, which is nice. At the beginning, I wasn't sure about it. But by the end, we all loved it.

Little House in the Big Woods (Little House, No 1) by Laura Ingalls Wilder
We also love the Ingalls family. We have read four of these books aloud now, and everyone loves them. We have learned so much as we've read them!

The Complete Chronicles of Narnia ( Boxed Set 7 Books ) by C.S. Lewis
If you haven't read these books, you must! Young or old, they must be read! And if you haven't read these aloud as a family, you should! They are so much fun to enjoy together. While they are all incredible, the first two are our favorites.

The Wind in the Willows (Sterling Illustrated Classics) by Kenneth Grahame
If your family hasn't gotten friendly with Mr. Toad and Badger and Mole, you should. We loved the characters of this book, and the illustrations in this copy are beautiful. If there's a well illustrated version of a classic, I will always spend a little more money on that. Not abridged, but well illustrated. This book will have everyone laughing.

Wonder by R. J. Palacio
I read this book to our sons years ago. They have reread it and listened to the audiobook countless times since then. They absolutely loved it! The publisher says this is for children ages 8-12. I don't think I would read it to a child younger than 8, but all ages above that would love it - adults included!

Half Magic (Tales of Magic) by Edward Eager
This is a really fun book, good for all ages. We read this years ago, but we all remember it well.

The Princess and the Goblin (Puffin Classics) by George MacDonald
This is a wonderful fantasy book that we all enjoyed!

I will be adding more as I remember what we have read and as we read them! We are always on the search for more read alouds. If you have a suggestion, leave a comment!
