Spiritual Reading

Over the years, so many books have helped me in my spiritual journey, increasing my understanding of our Catholic faith, encouraging and inspiring me, as well as helping me to grow in my faith.

Here are a list of my favorites!

RSV Catholic Bible Large Print - Bonded Leather & IndexedThe Revised Standard Version Catholic Bible in Large Print. I love this Bible mainly for the large print, so really, any large print Catholic Bible would do. It just makes it easier read, which is important! A Bible that sits on the shelf is not what we need! I do wish that it had more room in the margins to write notes, but I guess I can't have everything. Except for the Word of God, so that's pretty great!

The Fulfillment of All Desire by Ralph Martin
This book was immensely helpful. It is a journey through the spiritual life, leaning into the wisdom of seven Doctors of the Church, including St. Therese, St. John of the Cross, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Augustine, St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Francis de Sales.

An Introduction to the Devout Life (Tan Classics) by St. Francis de Sales
Originally published in 1609, it is quite amazing that St. Francis de Sales' advice is still relevant in our world today. The journey towards Jesus has not changed very much in the past 400 years!

33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat In Preparation for Marian Consecration
Jason and I journeyed through this book together in the summer of 2019. We began our 33 day journey the day we left a high school retreat in Alaska. On the Feast of the Assumption that summer, we consecrated ourselves and our family to Mary. This book is so deeply rich and beautiful in its description of Marian theology. I didn't have much of a relationship with Mary until she began pursuing me in 2016. This book has helped that relationship to grow!

Thirsting for Prayer by Jacques Philippe
This book is a small gem. It is so rich and reflective, and is incredibly encouraging and inspiring in one's personal prayer life.

Too Deep for Words: Rediscovering Lectio Divina by Thelma Hall
Again, another small gem. Sometimes the smallest books are the best. They're not overwhelming, but contain so much truth! The first 50 pages or so beautifully describe parts of the spiritual life and prayer. The last part of the book is a list of Scripture verses to refer to for lectio divina, organized by category! So practical and helpful!

The Ways of Mental Prayer by Rev. Dom Vitalis Lehodey
As I write this, I am only about 100 pages into this, but so far, I love it. It is both inspiring and practical at the same time, and contains so much truth about prayer. It is helpful that it gives practical descriptions of what exactly to do.

Queen of Heaven: Mary's Battle For Souls by Brian Kennelly and Rick Rotondi
This is such a beautiful book! It describes the role of Mary throughout salvation history so beautifully! I learned a lot!

Autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila (Dover Books on Western Philosophy)
As I am writing this, I also have not quite finished this one, but it has been so wonderful! I have a new friend in heaven, and have gotten to know her so much better through this book. I have enjoyed her description of the spiritual life more in this book than in The Interior Castle.

The Catholic All Year Compendium: Liturgical Living for Real Life by Kendra Tierney, the queen of liturgical living. Seriously. If you want to know how to celebrate Pentecost or All Souls Day or the Feast of St. Blaise as a family, look no further than this book. It's a goldmine. As is her blog at Catholic All Year.

That's all for now! I am sure I will think of more!
